Report of the European Works Councils project, in which UGT participates, is published

By UGT Internacional

Between February 2019 and April 2020, the Unión General de Trabajadoras y Trabajadores has participated as a co-applicant in the project “EWC: the proper handling of economic information as a key to productive communication and negotiation”.

The main objective of this European project is to provide support to European Works Councils in order to become better interlocutors with company management bodies. In the course of the project, trade union experts from Poland, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria have participated and worked together to create a mechanism for timely handling of information and develop the necessary skills to deal with critical information.

UGT underlines, among the conclusions of this report, that different industrial relations realities still exist in Europe but that EWCs everywhere face common problems largely rooted in the legal environment. The union also points out that EWCs do not have important prerogatives, nor are they always established as they should be. In addition, there are serious problems in the handling of information. All this implies a structural asymmetry of power between company management and workers’ representatives.
